A Thousand Maps makes history visible. We take the events that shaped the world — wars, revolutions, the rise and fall of nations — and animate them as maps, region by region, moment by moment.

Every story gets its own animated map: colors shifting across countries and regions as time moves forward. The full animation lives on our YouTube channel; each article here is the written companion to that video.

Every event gets its own page: a written breakdown of what happened, when, and where, illustrated with captures from the map animation — key facts, dates and sources laid out like an infographic you can read at your own pace.

Each article links to its animated version on YouTube, so you can read the story here and then watch it unfold. We're building this one verified map at a time — every event is researched and sourced before it's published.

The mission: 1000 maps

Our first map covers the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 — republics breaking away, borders redrawn in the space of a year. It's the starting point of a much bigger goal: one thousand animated maps, spanning wars, revolutions, and the moments that redrew the world.

New maps are added as the project grows — track our progress on the Roadmap page. If you watch history, geography, or geopolitics content, this is where the story keeps unfolding.
